The Hutt City Council Archives hold the records of local authorities in this region and a small group of community archives. Our role is to preserve and make these accessible to the public.
You will find records from the Domain Boards, Eastbourne Borough Council 1906-1989, Hutt City Council 1989-, Hutt County Council 1914-1988 (within our current boundary), Hutt River Board 1879-1973, Hutt Valley Drainage Board 1942-1989, Hutt Valley Energy Board Hutt 1887-1996, Valley Underground Water Authority 1960-1973, Lower Hutt Borough Council 1891-1941, Lower Hutt City Council 1941-1989, Petone Borough Council 1888-1989, and the Wainuiomata District Council 1988-1989.
The records include correspondence files, minute books, rate books, valuation records, council publications, bylaws, aerial photographs and photographs. We have archivists who can help you by doing an initial search of the finding aids, indexes, and archives and make suggestions regarding other sources which may be useful for your enquiry.
If you would like to search the finding aids yourself you will find them online at http://iportal.huttcity.govt.nz/ . Approximately 1% of the archives have been digitised and these images have been attached to their entry in the finding aids for immediate viewing.
For enquiries that require in-depth research there is a user charge and we will notify you in advance if this is the case. To view the archives please contact us to arrange a time to come to the Archives Reading Room or arrange for the archive to be copied and sent to you.
Please be aware copying of fragile originals or those that have privacy or copyright arrangements is restricted. We look forward to hearing from you.
