The Department of Conservation is the central Government agency charged with caring for New Zealand's natural and historic heritage for the betterment of future and present generations. We promote the benefits of conservation and our varied roles include:

  • Protecting New Zealand's native plants, animals, and habitats
  • Coordinating and training conservation volunteers
  • Looking after tracks, tramping huts and campgrounds on conservation land
  • Providing information for visitors to conservation land
  • Working with businesses, community groups, and iwi to help them become involved in conservation
  • Managing permits and licenses
  • Maintaining and "bringing back to life" some of New Zealand's historical areas and buildings
